Senate Democrats Fail to Pass Voting Rights Legislation

Attempts to pass the legislation on Wednesday and January 19th prove unsuccessful

Senate Democrats' last-ditch effort to pass voting rights legislation failed on Wednesday night. The legislation, which would have restored and updated the full protections of the landmark Voting Rights Act, failed to garner the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster.

A second attempt to pass the legislation on January 19th as part of a combined bill with the Freedom to Vote Act also failed, again falling short of the 60-vote threshold.

The Freedom to Vote Lewis Act, which would expand access to voting and strengthen election security, has been approved by the House of Representatives but has stalled in the Senate due to Republican opposition.
